Plan B provides coverage for stable pre-existing medical conditions (within 180 days before the effective date of the insurance) and is available for applicants who meet the eligibility requirements, are age 35 to 85, and who are residents of certain countries or districts.

* Applicants must be at least 35 years of age, and must complete the medical questionnaire. Available to residents of the following countries or districts: Austria, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
** These options may be purchased for each individual trip, regardless of whether a Single-Trip or Multi-Trip plan has been purchased.
Emergency Medical Benefits
Please note: If the claim is a result of an act of terrorism, benefits may be limited.
Emergency Medical Attention: Medical care received from a physician in or out of a hospital, the cost of a hospital room (semi-private room when available or an intensive care unit when medically necessary), the services of a licensed private duty nurse while you are in hospital, the rental or purchase (whichever is less) of a hospital bed, wheelchair, brace, crutch or other medical appliance, tests that are needed to diagnose or find out more about your condition, and drugs that are prescribed for you and are available only by prescription from a physician or dentist. Follow up visits are covered until the attending physician, or our medical advisors, declare the end of the medical emergency.
Professional services due to covered risk - Care received from a licensed chiropractor, osteopath, chiropodist, physiotherapist or podiatrist, up to $300 per profession.
Ambulance transportation.
Emergency dental treatment - up to $300 for the relief of dental pain; or up to $3,000 if you suffer from an accidental blow to the mouth.
Expenses related to death from covered medical condition - up to $3,000 to prepare or cremate the body, plus up to $3,000 for burial at place of death or the expenses to return the body to the country of origin.
Expenses to return home, if recommended by attending physician.
Extra expenses for meals, hotel, phone calls and taxi - reimbursement of up to $150 per day to maximum of $1,500 for extra expenses for meals, hotel, phone calls and taxi due to medical emergency.
Expenses to bring someone to your bedside if traveling alone and admitted to a hospital for three days or more.
Childcare expenses - up to $100 per day to a maximum of $300 per trip reimbursement.
Return of children under your care, if you are admitted to hospital for more than 24 hours.
OPTIONAL BENFITS:
Trip Interruption
Up to $1,500 for Single Coverage and $5,000 for Family Coverage If you have pre-paid travel arrangements and want to protect yourself if your trip is interrupted. This insurance is available for purchase with all plans and provides coverage for an individual trip.
Travel Accident
Available for purchase with all plans and provides coverage for an individual trip.
Top-Up Options
Top-Up coverage must be purchased prior to departure and is subject to an extra premium charge.
Single-Trip Emergency Medical Plan A can be used to top up Multi-Trip Emergency Medical Plan A, and Single-Trip Emergency Medical Plan B can be used to top-up Multi-Trip Emergency Medical Plan B. Top-ups can be purchased for maximum trip duration of 365 days.
EXCLUSIONS:
AGE LIMIT:
Coverage is available from 31 days to age 85 years. Maximum period of coverage is 365 days.
DEDUCTIBLES:
The published rates for all Emergency Medical Plans include a $75 deductible. The following deductible options and discounts are available: 15% discount for $500 deductible and 20% for $1,000 deductible. $0 deductible option is also available for visitors up to age 85.
WAITING PERIOD for illness:
A waiting period applies if the insurance is purchased after arrival in Canada and applies to any claim that is not the result of an accidental bodily injury. The waiting periods are:
the 48-hour period following the effective date of insurance if the insurance is purchased within 30 days of arrival in Canada
the 8-day period following the effective date of insurance if the insurance is purchased more than 30 days after arrival in Canada
No waiting period if the insurance policy is purchased before your arrival in Canada.
PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS:
Plan A - Manulife will not pay any expenses relating to:
a) a pre-existing condition for which medication has been taken, received or prescribed and/or treatment has been received in the 180 days before the effective date of insurance;
b) any heart condition if, in the 180 days before the effective date, you required any form of nitroglycerine for the relief of angina pain; and/or
c) any lung condition, if in the 180 days before the effective date, you required treatment with oxygen or prednisone for a lung condition.
Plan B - Manulife will not pay any expenses relating to:
a) pre-existing condition that is not stable in the 180 days before the effective date of insurance;
b) any heart condition if, in the 180 days before the effective date, you required any form of nitroglycerine for the relief of angina pain; and/or
c) any lung condition if, in the 180 days before the effective date, you required treatment with oxygen or prednisone for a lung condition.
Expenses for a pre-existing condition for which you were hospitalized either more than once, or for at least two consecutive days, in the 12-months period before your effective date of insurance.
"Pre-existing condition" is defined in the policy booklet as a medical condition that exists before your effective date of insurance.
Note: Each time you extend or purchase another policy from the insurance company because you are staying in Canada longer, each new or extended policy will have a new effective date and you will NOT be covered under the new or extended policy for any sickness, disease or bodily injury for which your had symptoms, hospitalization, taken medication or medical procedure at any time in the 180 days prior to your effective date.
Stable, a medical condition for which:
- There have been no new symptoms, existing symptoms have not become more frequent or more severe;
- A physician has not determined that the condition has become worse;
- A physician (or other medical professional) has not prescribed or recommended a change in medication taken or medical care received for that condition;
- A physician (or other medical professional) has not prescribed or recommended a change in how often the medication is taken or medical care is received for that condition;
It has not required admission to a hospital.
OTHER EXCLUSIONS:
- A medical condition resulting from hang-gliding, rock climbing, mountaineering, parachuting or skydiving.
- Participating in a motorized speed contest; or your professional participation in a sport, when that sport is your principal paid occupation.
- Pregnancy or childbirth, complications of your pregnancy or childbirth when they happen in the 9 weeks before or after the expected date of delivery.
- Any act of war or act of terrorism.
IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, YOU MUST CALL THE ASSISTANCE CENTRE IMMEDIATELY: 1-877-878-0142 toll free from Canada or the U.S., or 519-251-5166 collect call from anywhere else. If you do not contact the Assistance Centre before receiving medical treatment, you will have to pay 25% of the medical expenses we would normally pay under this insurance. If it is medically impossible for you to call, we ask that you call as soon as you can or that someone calls on your behalf.
CLAIMS:
To make a claim due to illness or injury during your trip, please call the customer service centre: 1-877-878-0142 toll free Canada/U.S or 519-251-5166.
Your claim must be sent to Manulife within 90 days of your loss.

If you disagree with the claim decision, the matter will be submitted to arbitration under the arbitration law in the Canadian province or territory where your policy was issued. Legal action to recover a claim must start within 12 months of the date the insurance monies would have been payable if it were a valid claim and be undertaken before courts of the Canadian province or territory where your policy was issued.

Who Can Apply?
- Visitors to Canada
- Canadians who are not eligible for benefits under a government health insurance plan
- Persons who are in Canada on a work or student visa
- New immigrants who are awaiting government health insurance plan coverage
- All applicants must meet the Coverage Eligibility.
SIDE TRIPS:
This insurance provides coverage for up to 30 days while traveling outside Canada as long as the side trip originates and terminates in Canada and does not exceed 49% of the total number of coverage days.
REFUNDS:
You may obtain a refund of premium
a) if you cancel your policy at any time before the effective date of insurance; or
b) if you return home before the date you were scheduled to as per your confirmation, and have not had a claim, you may ask for a refund of the premium for the unused days of your trip (minimum $25).
Simply contact us to ask for a refund and provide proof of the date you actually returned home.
EXTENSIONS:
To extend your coverage, you must make your request before your expiry date or the date you were scheduled to return home as per your confirmation. If you have not had a medical condition or have a pending claim since your effective date of insurance, the extension may be issued upon request. If you have, the extension is subject to the approval of the Assistance Centre.
