TuGo Sports & Activities
The optional Sports Coverage may only be purchased as an endorsement to an Emergency Medical Insurance issued by TuGo.
BENEFITS:
Applicable to All Ages: when this Optional Coverage is purchased, the company will pay reasonable and customary charges for medical and related expenses up to the coverage limits for an acute, sudden and unexpected emergency medical condition while participating in, training or practicing for the following sports or activities, if you select the applicable sport or activity at the time of application:
Maximum limit – Up to the sum insured as indicated on the Policy declaration
-
Backcountry skiing/snowboarding
An area that is not marked, not patrolled and/or not cleared for avalanche dangers, but where public access is permitted. Also known as slackcountry, sidecountry and/or off-piste. Does not include heli-skiing or cat skiing.
-
BASE jumping
Select this if you plan to BASE jump. Wingsuit flying and parachuting/skydiving are separate selections.
-
Boxing
Covers participating in, training for or practising boxing. Mixed martial arts is a separate selection.
-
Downhill freestyle skiing/snowboarding in organized competitions
Any skiing or snowboarding competition involving aerial skiing/snowboarding, kite-skiing, mogul or cross competitions, half-pipes and/or slopestyle activities, rails, jumps and other terrain park features.
-
Downhill mountain biking
Biking down mountain trails or rough mountain terrain, whether as part of a race or not, often featuring jumps, drops, rock gardens or other obstacles. It often requires the use of mechanical lifts or elevators.
-
Hang gliding/paragliding
Covers both hang gliding and paragliding under a single selection.
-
High risk motorized speed activities
Motocross, dirt biking and/or motorcycling unless only riding as a mode of transportation; and/or any motorized vehicle racing competitions, endurance events or timed activities, including snowmobile racing.
A motorized vehicle activity done solely for leisure, not timed, and not in training or practice for a racing competition or endurance event is not a high risk motorized speed activity, and no optional coverage is required.
-
High risk snowmobiling and motorized snow biking
Snowmobiling (including highmarking) and/or motorized snow biking in unguided backcountry terrain. Guided and on-trail snowmobiling does not require this selection.
-
Ice climbing
Climbing or rappelling from vertical or nearly vertical ice formations such as ice falls, frozen waterfalls, or cliffs or rock slabs covered with ice from flows of water freezing over. Requires specialized equipment such as ice axes, crampons or ice screws.
Glacier hiking is not ice climbing. If the glacier hike is on a mountain, it is considered mountaineering.
-
Mixed martial arts
A combat sport in which participants use fighting and grappling techniques from any combination of wrestling, boxing and martial arts. Includes ultimate fighting.
-
Mountaineering over a 6,000-metre elevation
Climbing or descending a mountain to or from an elevation of over 6,000 metres, measured from sea level, using specialized equipment such as pickaxes, ice axes, anchors, bolts, crampons, carabineers and lead or top rope anchoring equipment. Includes ski mountaineering (skimo).
If you are mountaineering both below and above 6,000 metres, you only need to select this option. Ice climbing done as part of the mountaineering is covered automatically; ice climbing as a separate activity must be added.
Air ambulance service from the mountain is limited to one air ambulance per trip.
-
Mountaineering up to a 6,000-metre elevation
Climbing or descending a mountain to or from an elevation of 6,000 metres or less, measured from sea level, using specialized equipment such as pickaxes, ice axes, anchors, bolts, crampons, carabineers and lead or top rope anchoring equipment. Includes ski mountaineering (skimo).
If you use ice climbing equipment as part of the mountaineering, you do not need to select ice climbing separately — it is covered automatically. If you also plan to ice climb as a separate activity during your trip, you must add ice climbing for that to be covered.
-
Parachuting/skydiving/tandem skydiving
Covers all three under a single selection, including tandem jumps made with an instructor.
-
Rock climbing
Climbing rock faces, especially with the aid of ropes and special equipment. Includes bouldering, traditional climbing, free soloing, top-rope, sport climbing and canyoning/canyoneering. Does not include climbing indoor or outdoor artificial rock climbing walls.
-
Scuba diving or free diving over 40 metres
Required only for dives deeper than 40 metres. Recreational scuba diving and free diving to 40 metres are covered under the Emergency Medical Insurance plan without this optional coverage.
-
White water sports – Class VI
Rafting on extreme rapids or waterfalls deemed unnavigable by safety authorities — rapids with substantial levels of white water, large waves, hazardous rocks and/or drops with the potential to damage most rafting equipment.
-
Wingsuit flying
A separate selection from BASE jumping and from parachuting/skydiving.
The charges must result from an emergency that first occurs after coverage commences (including after any applicable waiting period) and while you are travelling outside your country of permanent residence.
For any of the sports or activities listed above, if you are coaching and/or officiating as a referee or sports official, the Sports & Activities Optional Coverage is not required for coverage to apply.
You will only be charged for the sport or activity with the highest premium charge.

-
Football (American and Canadian)

If you are under 21, or playing casually for fun, coverage is already available under the Emergency Medical Insurance plan without this optional coverage.
-
Ice hockey
Add ice hockey if you are 21 years or over at the time of application and plan to participate, train or practise on behalf of a registered team, league, association or club, or compete in a registered tournament, competition or sporting event. FAQs:
Can I buy insurance after I’ve already left home or arrived in Canada?
Yes, but a waiting period applies. If you buy within 60 days of arriving, there’s no coverage for illness in the first 48 hours. If you buy later than that, a 7-day waiting period applies. Accidents are covered from day one either way. Buying before you arrive removes the waiting period entirely.
Should I buy the add-on only for the days of my competition, or for my whole stay?
You must buy it for your full period of coverage. The Sports & Activities Coverage is an endorsement on your policy, not a day pass. It also has to be in force while you’re training or practising—a torn knee at Tuesday practice is just as much a claim as one on game day.
What exactly is covered if I need a rescue or evacuation from a remote area?
The policy covers a licensed ground, air, or sea ambulance and paramedics to the nearest hospital that can treat you. However, two conditions matter:
Air ambulance service must be pre-approved and arranged by TuGo, or it isn’t covered at all.
Above 6,000 metres, air rescue from the mountain is capped at one per trip.
Does buying the add-on increase my coverage limit?
No. It simply removes the activity exclusion so your claim is payable, up to the overall sum insured you already selected. If you’re heading into remote terrain, the sum insured is the number you should review carefully. Your deductible still applies.
Am I covered if I travel outside Canada during my stay?
Yes, as long as the majority of your coverage period is spent in Canada and you travelled to Canada first.
How do I confirm my specific activities are covered before I travel?
Never assume — read the definitions section of the policy wording, or have a licensed broker confirm it before you buy. Call us at 1-877-838-0020 or contact us today.
