Are flights to/from Canada covered?

 

Allianz – covered

Coverage starts on the effective date and ends on the expiry date.
Effective date means the later of:
a) the date and time the completed application is accepted by Allianz Global Assistance or its representative; or
b) the date indicated as the effective date on your confirmation of coverage; or
c) the first time you exit your country of origin.
If you purchase your policy after you have exited your country of origin, any sickness that manifests itself during the first 48 hours after the effective date is not covered even if related expenses are incurred after the 48-hour waiting period.
Expiry date means the earlier of:
a) the date indicated as the expiry date on your confirmation of coverage; or
b) the date you become eligible for coverage under a Canadian government insurance health plan.

Manulife – covered

Your coverage starts on the later of:
•  the effective date of insurance as shown on your confirmation; or
• the time and date you arrive in Canada from home. Except for losses resulting from any injury, coverage will begin 48 hours after the effective date if you purchase your policy:
• after the expiry date of an existing Manulife policy; or
• after you leave home.
When coverage is purchased prior to leaving home with an effective date equal to the date and time you are scheduled to arrive in Canada, coverage will also be provided with no additional premium during your uninterrupted flight directly to Canada. An uninterrupted flight can include a stop-over provided you do not leave the airport.

Your coverage ends on the earliest of the following:
•  11:59 PM on the expiry date indicated on your policy confirmation
• 11:59 PM on an earlier date calculated by us due to an incorrect or insufficient or lapsed premium payment
• The date and time you leave Canada or any other country (except as permitted under the Travelling outside Canada: Side trips and Trip breaks provision)
• The date we receive proof that you are eligible and covered under a GHIP. Note: Until acceptable proof of coverage under a GHIP is received, this policy will continue to provide eligible benefits that are not covered by your GHIP.
At no additional premium, coverage will be provided during an uninterrupted flight from Canada directly to your country of origin. An uninterrupted flight shall include a stop-over provided you do not leave the airport.
You may return to your country of origin without cancelling your policy. Your coverage will be suspended while you are in your country of origin and will resume when you return to Canada.  There will be no refund of premium related to your suspension of coverage while in your country of origin and your expiry date will not change.

Destination Canada – covered

Effective date means the date and time coverage starts. Coverage begins on the latest of the following:
a) the date and time the completed application and premium are accepted by The Destination: Travel Group Inc. or its agent/broker; or
b) the date indicated as the effective date in your confirmation of coverage; or
c) the date and time you exit your country of origin.
Expiry date means the date and time coverage ends. Coverage ends on the date indicated as the expiry date in your confirmation of coverage.

TuGo – covered

Coverage commences on the effective date of the Policy as indicated on your Policy declaration, which must be on or after the application date of the Policy. The effective date can be either:
a) The date you leave your country of permanent residence for direct travel to Canada (direct travel includes stopovers and layovers), provided travel to Canada does not exceed 48 hours; or,
b) The date you arrive in Canada; or,
c) Any date after you arrive in Canada.
Coverage is also subject to the waiting period requirements.
Coverage terminates on the earliest of:
1. 11:59 PM on the expiry date of the Policy; or,
2. On the date and time you return permanently to your country of permanent residence; or,
3. On the date and time you become insured under a provincial or territorial government health care plan; or,
4. On the date and time you are no longer a visitor to Canada, international student studying in Canada or foreign worker, with valid legal status in Canada.

21st Century – covered

Coverage starts on the effective date and ends on the expiry date.
Effective date means the latest of:
a) the time and date you apply for this insurance;
b) 12:01 AM on the effective date as shown on your policy confirmation; or
c) your arrival date.
When coverage is purchased prior to leaving your country of origin with an effective date equal to the date and time you are scheduled to arrive in Canada, coverage will also be provided with no additional premium during your uninterrupted flight directly to Canada. An uninterrupted flight shall include a stop-over provided you do not leave the airport.
Expiry date means the earliest of:
a) 11:59 PM on the expiry date indicated on your policy confirmation;
b) 11:59 PM on an earlier date calculated by us due to an incorrect or insufficient or lapsed premium payment;
c) the date and time you leave Canada (or such other country as permitted under the “Side-Trips Outside of Canada” provision); or
d) the date 21st Century receives proof that you are eligible and covered under a GHIP. NOTE: until acceptable proof of coverage under a GHIP is received, this policy will continue to provide eligible benefits that are not covered by your GHIP.
At no additional premium, coverage will be provided during an uninterrupted flight from Canada directly to your country of origin. An uninterrupted flight shall include a stop-over provided you do not leave the airport.

Blue Cross – NOT covered

If you purchased the contract before your arrival in Canada the coverage becomes effective at the latest of the following dates:
• The effective date of the contract indicated on your insurance certificate, or
• The date of arrival in Canada from your country of permanent residence, or
• The day following the termination date of an insurance coverage in Canada similar to Blue Cross that you hold with another insurance company.

GMS – covered

Coverage will be provided while you are in transit between Canada and your country of origin for a period of no more than 48 hours after your initial departure for no additional premium

AwayCare – covered

Your coverage starts on the later of:
 • the Effective date of insurance as shown on Your Confirmation; or
 • the time and date You arrive in Canada from Home. Except for losses resulting from any Injury, coverage will begin 48 hours after the Effective date if You purchase Your policy:
 • after the Expiry date of an existing policy issued by Us; or
 • after You leave Home.
When coverage is purchased prior to leaving Home with an Effective date equal to the date and time You are scheduled to arrive in Canada, coverage will also be provided with no additional premium during Your uninterrupted flight directly to Canada. An uninterrupted flight can include a stop-over provided You do not leave the airport. 

Your coverage ends on the earliest of the following:
 • each time You leave Canada to return Home;
 • when Your policy expires as shown in Your Confirmation; 
 • when You become a resident of a nursing Home, Home for the aged, or other long-term care facility during Your Trip;
 • 365 days after Your Effective date of insurance; or
 • the first day You become insured under a provincial government health insurance plan.
When coverage is purchased prior to leaving Canada to return Home with an Expiry date equal to the date and time You are scheduled to leave Canada, coverage will also be provided with no additional premium during Your uninterrupted flight from Canada directly Home.  An uninterrupted flight can include a stop-over provided You do not leave the airport.
During Your coverage period, if You return Home under the Trip Break allowance, Your Visitors to Canada coverage will be suspended but not terminated and when You return to Canada, Your policy coverage will resume provided You are still eligible for coverage.
There will be no refund of premium for any of the days during Your return Home. 

TruStone – covered to Canada (return flight is NOT covered)

Expenses incurred outside of Canada are not covered unless they are incurred while in direct transit (including layovers) to Canada, provided the insured experiences the emergency while the contract is in effect.
Please note: Flights from Canada to your country of normal residence are not covered under this benefit.
